Putting people to work with soda tax dollars is a value shared by the Sugary Drinks Distributor Tax Advisory Committee (SDDTAC) and the Department of Public Health (DPH), but the emphasis is on hiring people from the priority populations thereby providing services AND job opportunities to those most impacted by sugary drinks. Funded organizations are encouraged to hire and train community members in large part because people from the community they are serving are more likely to resonate and connect with those they are serving. Soda Tax funds aren’t intended to generate large numbers of jobs, but the revenue can have multiple positive benefits: jobs being one of them.
